In 1976 Xavier Roberts as a 21 year old art student rediscovered "needle molding" (a German technique for fabric sculpture from the early 1800s). He combines his quilting skills passed down from his mother together with his interest in sculpture and creates his first soft-scultures. After exhibiting his products at various arts and crafts shows he discovers that many parents were happy to pay the "adoption fee" to aqcuire his unique creations, each of which came with its own birth certificate. Xavier and five of his friends incorporate Original Appalachian Artwors Inc and with the proceeds they renovate the L.G Neal Clinic, turning it into "babyland General Hospital" and opening it to the public. Growing success of Xavier's hand made dolls attracted several major publications many of which published multiple articles about Xavier and his creations. Since then Cabbage Patch Kids were published in all major magazines and newspapers, became available across the globe and even traveled to outer space.
